George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four

Videos

This early, and rarely seen, televised adaptation of George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four seems no less relevant today than when it first aired in 1954. It is a BBC production and features noted actors Peter Cushing and Donald Pleasence. Except for some inserts of exteriors, the play was filmed live. The music was also live. Conductor Hotchkis and his orchestra played in Lime Grove Studio E, adjacent to the studio where the actors were performing. The musicians synchronized their playing via a closed-circuit screen. This television play was hugely controversial when it came out, and though it may seem tame today, its depiction of a totalitarian regime controlling the population's freedom of thought was upsetting to most viewers.
